FAYETTEVILLE, NC (Feb. 12, 2020)—Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC), Tidewater Transit, and Fayetteville-Cumberland Economic Development Corporation (FCEDC) are pleased to announce an upcoming informational forum for women in transportation and logistics. This unique event, designed to provide insight for women interested in fields such as driving, customer service, fleet maintenance, and HR, will be held February 19 from 1 – 2:30 p.m. at the Tony Rand Student Center at FTCC.

“The forum is to educate women about career opportunities in transportation and logistics. Women make up only 6% of the transportation sector, so we want to bring as much awareness to it as we can,” said John Hart, Terminal Manager at Tidewater Transit.

Convening industry professionals and applicants, the program will educate those about opportunities and gain enrollment numbers in FTCC’s TOMS program. Attendees will hear from an all-female panel from Slay Transportation, Dana-Suttles, Taylor Express, Tidewater Transit Company, and Systel Distribution Center. Speakers will discuss their leadership roles, experiences and “how-to’s” in the industry. Participants will also hear firsthand from keynote speaker Crystal Collins, the President of the North Carolina Trucking Association (NCTA).

Ms. Collins has been in her role since April 2010 and advocates for the North Carolina trucking industry, bringing attention to the importance of a diverse and appropriately-trained field. She also serves on multiple relevant committees such as the NC Statewide Freight Advisory Committee and NC Moves 2050 Plan Statewide. Collins worked alongside NCDOT NC Transportation Advisory Group and served on the No Tolls I-95 Advisory Council. Coming from a trucking family, she has long understood the significance of the industry, as well as areas of improvement, which will be discussed at the event.

Following the panel and keynote speaker, leaders from FTCC and NC Works will be available to meet with any individuals looking for professional development opportunities. Each will cover the pathways to successful employment and provide general guidance in entering a new career. Tidewater Transit will be displaying a company tractor onsite for those who are interested. “Having onsite equipment, they’ll potentially be working with, helps give perspective on the complexity of it,” Hart said.
