National Manufacturing Day 2017

While it might not have been on everyone’s calendar, October 6th was National Manufacturing Day. This event is celebrated every first Friday in October with thousands of manufacturers opening their doors to students, teachers, parents, job seekers, and other community members. The day is also an appropriate time to reflect on this important sector of our economy.

Our local manufacturers provide more than 6,700 jobs, represent over $478 million in earnings, and account for $2.5 billion in sales each year. While many of our high-tech industries require specialized skills and training, we have some of the best educational partners possible in our area’s community colleges and universities. Careers in robotics, engineering, maintenance, computer operations, safety, human resources, management, production, logistics, and transportation are all found in today’s industrial operations. Locally, our manufacturing workers’ backgrounds are as diverse as their job titles with many of them originally from Europe, Asia, and South America.

Beyond providing jobs for our citizens, this industry gives back to the community through financial support and disaster relief. Individual companies regularly donate to local, state, and national organizations and the Fayetteville Area Plant Managers Association annually supports the South-Central Chapter of Professional Engineers of North Carolina’s MATHCOUNTS competition, an enrichment program that prepares middle school students for future careers in engineering and technical fields.

Please join the FCEDC in recognizing the positive economic and social impact these companies and their employees have on our community and country.
